นอกจากนี้ที่ประชุม กบง.ยังเห็นชอบแผนขับเคลื่อนการดำเนินงานด้านสมาร์ทกริดของประเทศไทย ในระยะสั้นพ.ศ.2560-2564 โดยมอบหมายให้กระทรวงพลังงานและหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องรับไปดำเนินการต่อไป โดยตามแผนขับเคลื่อนสมาร์ทกริดนั้น มีกรอบวงเงินงบประมาณในการดำเนินการรวมกว่า 5 พันล้านบาท ซึ่งในส่วนนี้ได้รับการอนุมัติแล้วราว 3 พันล้านบาท ซึ่งเป็นการดำเนินการร่วมกันระหว่างการไฟฟ้าทั้ง 3 แห่ง สถาบันวิจัย สถาบันการศึกษา สนพ. สำนักงานคณะกรรมการกำกับกิจการพลังงาน (กกพ.) กรมพัฒนาพลังงานทดแทนและอนุรักษ์พลังงาน
